Saket Mehendale is a Pune-based self-taught artist, who often captures the visceral quality of landscapes, streetscapes and nature in his drawings. Each work draws inspiration from his kinship with nature and appeals to the spirituality of it with his keen eye for detail, while the tactile aspects of his practice are skilfully showcased through his vivid strokes and textures. For Saket, it’s not about how picturesque the subject is but about what emotion it evokes.

One of Saket’s motifs is the lilies, which he portrays in an alluringly distinctive way each time they make it on his canvas – they are rendered in cheerful vibrancy when he goes for a bold colour palette, or can be more intriguing like when he captures the pitch-dark night beneath the lily pads.
His art is mostly centred around water colours with frequent explorations into dry media like pastels, colour pencils, charcoal and graphite. Saket believes every art form should be honed with diligent practice, which he calls ‘riyaz’. For him riyaz is doing the opposite of what engrosses him. So, he chooses to draw anything but landscapes in this time to sharpen his overall skills – a true testament to his journey as an self-taught artist.
Saket earned his Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from Pune University and did his Masters in Landscape from CEPT Ahmedabad. Saket’s work has been showcased in several exhibitions in Pune
